CPD officer catches man sitting in his pickup, shooting up

The new year started off for the Chico Police Department with a drug arrest at Winco Foods –

Chico – On January 1 , at 4:30 PM, Chico Police Officers were dispatched to a report of a possible DUI in the parking lot of Winco Foods.

Upon their arrival officers located multiple witnesses to the DUI. The witnesses directed officers to a white sedan that had been driven by Roy Shields (71 years old).

Shields was taken to Enloe Hospital for a pre-existing medical condition. Once at the hospital, officers conducted an investigation that led them to believe Shields was driving under the influence.

Due to his medical condition, Shields was arrested and released with a notice to appear.

A Chico Police Officer attempted to contact a witness to the DUI, Johnathan Ryan (36 years old), to obtain more information from him.

As the officer approached Ryan, who was seated in his pickup, the officer saw Ryan injecting what appeared to be heroin in his arm.

Ryan was detained and found to be in possession of 6 grams of heroin. Ryan was arrested and booked into Butte County Jail for possession of a controlled substance.
