WESTMORELAND – Two search warrants were served in the Westmoreland area on May 28th in an effort to investigate an alleged cockfighting ring.

Ultimately 224 birds were seized as a result of the search warrants. In addition, John Michael Chappelear of Brawley was taken into custody for his part in the cockfighting operation.

The allegations against Chappelear include training and possessing birds to be used in fighting exhibitions.

The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office said, “A criminal complaint against Mr. Chappelear will be forwarded to the Imperial County District Attorney for review and prosecution.”

Imperial County Animal Control assisted in the case and will be caring for the birds during the course of the case. The Imperial Valley Expo also helped by providing equipment for the large number of birds to be brought to safety.
