An Imperial County inmate was recently arrested after allegedly posing as another inmate and being mistakenly released.

On Friday, July 23, 21-year-old Athan Emmanuel Estrada was mistakenly released from prison after assuming the identity of another inmate, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

One week later on Friday, July 30, U.S. Marshals coordinated with the Direccion de Seguridad Publica Municipal to locate and arrest Estrada. He was detained by DSPM authorities at the Calexico Port of Entry and taken into custody by U.S. Marshals.

He is set to be booked again at the Oren Fox Detention Facility while the Sheriff’s Office works to investigate the circumstances that led to his escape.
