Unlicensed Driver Found with Home-made Handgun Silencer

Gun with silencer confiscated (FPD)

Officers Ger Vang and John Alonzo from Southeast District were nearly struck by another vehicle during their August 6th night shift when Juan Manuel Cortez-Rico blew through a stop sign as he traveled West on Nevada Avenue near 6th Street.

Cortez-Rico, 39, and resident of Fresno, was pulled over and found driving without a license. Officers conducted a search of Cortez-Rico’s person and found a “fully loaded Raven Arms 25 semi auto handgun stuffed in his waistband,” reported the Fresno Police Department.

The handgun, enhanced with a “do-it-yourself” silencer (home-made from a flashlight), had scratched out serial numbers. Cortez-Rico, who was also in possession of narcotics, was subsequently arrested and booked at Fresno County Jail.

The community is encouraged to take part of Crime Stoppers’ (559-498-STOP) newly enhanced reward system. Anonymous tips leading to an arrest of a gang member for possession of a handgun will be rewarded with $2000.

The reward for information leading to an arrest of a gang member for possession of an assault rifle or the arrest of a gang member for human trafficking is $3000.

Information leading to the arrest for a gang member involved in drug sales is $1000. As always, your information will remain confidential.
