Circuitous Joy Ride Ends in Arrest in Novato

NOVATO – The Novato Police Department (NPD) recently issued a Community Bulletin about a report of a stolen vehicle at 125 Vintage Way shortly after 2:30pm on Tuesday, February 2.

The victim reported that his vehicle had been stolen in the vicinity of Matt & Jeff’s Carwash while he had left it momentarily unattended. He saw the suspect drive his car away, knocking trash barrels over in the process of fleeing. The victim immediately notified NPD.

A NPD Traffic Unit was in the vicinity and observed the stolen vehicle on northbound US 101. The Officer trailed the car at a distance and then saw the vehicle exit the highway at San Antonio Road. The suspect traversed the overpass and then turned back onto US 101 southbound to Novato.

NPD Patrol and Traffic Officers initiated an enforcement stop when the vehicle proceeded onto the northbound US 101 onramp at Atherton Avenue. The suspect was apprehended and arrested without incident.

The suspect was identified as David Leroy Dobras, a 36-year-old resident of Oroville. Dobras was booked into the Marin County Jail for suspicion of vehicle theft and for driving without a license. The vehicle was returned to its owner. NPD Officers Powell, Bates and Cantley participated in the apprehension.
