SAN JOSE – According to SJPD Press Information Officer Albert Morales, “The San Jose Police Department is currently investigating a fatal hit and run collision involving a vehicle vs. pedestrian.”

The suspect who was wanted for his involvement in the accident turned himself in to San Jose Police just days after the crash. 29-year-old Pedro Cortez Bernal was arrested and charged with felony hit and run.

On Tuesday, October 13 at approximately 7:05 am, a call came in to report a vehicle colliding with a pedestrian near North White Road and Florence Avenue in San Jose. Morales said,” Upon arrival, officers located an adult male down on the roadway suffering from serious injuries.” Medical personnel tried to treat the injured pedestrian, but he was soon pronounced deceased at the scene.

Morales said, “Preliminary investigation revealed a white Ford full size pick-up truck was traveling northbound on White Road when it collided with the pedestrian in the roadway. After colliding with the pedestrian the suspect vehicle fled the scene and did not return.”

SJPD investigators described the suspect’s vehicle as white Ford pick-up truck with black rims, that had a full-size truck bed, raised tinted windows and a loud exhaust muffler.

Patrolling SJPD officers located the suspected truck in the area of North Capitol Avenue near Alum Rock Avenue. The truck was towed away from the area and stored as evidence. Later that evening, the suspect turned himself into the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. The San Jose Police arrived and took Bernal into custody, and booked him into the Santa Clara County Jail for felony hit and run.

Persons with information about this incident are asked to contact Detective Sadsad of the San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit at 408-277-4654.
