Man kills ex-girlfriend’s parents, is Fatally shot by police

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Police Department has experienced another officer involved shooting in which a suspect was holed up in a home where he had reportedly shot and killed two people.

San Jose Officers responded to the 1000 block of Laura Ville Lane around 9 p.m. Wednesday night after the adult son of the victims reported that his parents had been shot.

When police arrived to the frantic 9-1-1 call by the adult son who had escaped the home, they saw that a man was dead near the front door. His wife was also inside the home along with the 13-year-old son.   The 13-year-old son was released after the San Jose Police Department’s MERGE UNIT negotiation team tried to talk to Tatlic in order to get him to come out.  But after Tatlic brandished a gun at responding teams, a San Jose officer, fearing for his safety, fired his weapon and hit the suspect at least once, killing him at the scene.

Neren and Raynha Prabhu

Following a break up with the victim’s daughter, 24-year-old Mirza Tatlic shot and killed Naren Prabhu and his wife Raynha. Prabhu was a Vice President of Engineering at Juniper Networks in Sunnyvale.

The family had a restraining order against Tatlic. Ominous hints of this impending act of vengeance were posted on Instagram in the days leading up to the attack.

“We were dealing with someone who was mentally ill,” Chief Eddie Garcia said. “He had choices. He didn’t give this family a choice.  He didn’t give my officer a choice.”

The officer was a 17-year veteran with the department and has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation into the incident by the San Jose Homicide Investigative Unit, Internal Affairs and Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office.
