Enforcement stop leads to officer-involved shooting

WEAVERVILLE – At approximately 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, a CHP officer attempted to pull over a 2013 Kia for speeding.  The driver slowed down near the Indian Creek Lodge on SR-299, just east of Douglas City.  42-year-old Sean E. Karjala of Redding who was behind the wheel, tried to attack the officer with an edged weapon during the enforcement stop.  As a result, the officer shot the suspect.

Karlaja was transported to Mercy Medical Center for the treatment of multiple gunshot wounds.  The CHP officer was not harmed.  The circumstance is currently under investigation by the Trinity County Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Department of Justice.  Anyone with information is encouraged to call (530) 225-2715.
