Teen arms himself after burglar knocks on door

WOODLAND – Authorities are crediting two young Woodland siblings with keeping their cool when a burglar came knocking at their door Tuesday morning, making a crucial 911 call that led to the suspect’s arrest minutes after the crime.

Woodland police Sgt. Dan Letamendi said the 12-year-old boy who made the call was home alone with his older sister when the suspect — later identified as Jason Philip Navarrete — began pounding on the back door of the Third Street house shortly after 8 a.m.

“When there was no response … Navarrete forced his way through the back door, entered the home then walked around inside and removed a bottle of wine,” Letamendi said.

“As Navarrete was pounding on the door and forcing his way into the house, the 12-year-old armed himself with a BB gun while he and his 14-year-old sister called their parents and police,” Letamendi continued. “Both children exited the house as Navarrete made entry.”

Officers arrived on scene several minutes later and arrested the 24-year-old Navarrete as he was walking near the front door of the home, still carrying the stolen wine, Letamendi said.

Navarrete, a West Sacramento resident, was lodged at the Yolo County Jail. His bail has been set at $50,000.
