Lemon thief busted in Taft

TAFT — An 55-year-old man has been arrested for stealing lemons from a local orchard.

Jose Pena, 55,  of Taft, was booked at the Taft City Jail for grand theft, possession of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance.

According to the the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, deputies assigned to the Taft substation, 30 mile east of Bakersfield, responded to a call to a lemon orchard owned by Paramount Citrus Company, located at Highway 166 and Old River Road on the morning of Jan, 7, 2014.

Upson their arrival, deputies said the witnessed Pena stealing lemons and loading them into his vehicle.

After his arrest, deputies said they found approximately 250 pounds of stolen lemons from the orchard in inside of Pena’s vehicle, along with an industrial type battery which had been stolen from a wind machine located in the same lemon orchard.

Pena was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine.
