VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. — Detectives arrested Brian Banner, 45, of Camarillo,  for theft, 10 days after golf clubs and equipment worth thousands of dollars were stolen from a charity golf tournament, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Detective Sgt. Ernan Jauregui, a department spokesman, said patrol deputies were called to Las Posas Country Club on the afternoon of Oct. 12 after “staff discovered that golf clubs had been stolen during an event benefiting a local religious organization.”

The suspect had left before deputies arrived. Witness statements and surveillance video helped deputies develop “a description of a vehicle believed to have been involved in the theft.”

Detectives with the Camarillo Investigation Bureau used the agency’s automated license plate reader system to search for the vehicle. The system led deputies to a suspected vehicle and then to Banner. Detectives obtained a warrant to search Banner, his vehicle and his residence.

Deputies served the warrant on the morning of Oct. 22 and recovered the stolen golf clubs and equipment. Banner was arrested and taken to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on a charge of grand theft.

Banner has since been released on bond.
