Shasta County Authorities Investigating after Explosive Device Found Behind Montgomery Creek Post Office

SHASTA COUNTY, CA — “On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at approximately 8:50 AM, a citizen reported finding an improvised explosive device in the area of the Montgomery Creek Post Office, located at 30346 Highway 299. The device was suspected to be a pipe bomb and was promptly reported to law enforcement upon its discovery. An Officer with the California Highway Patrol initially responded, evacuated the Post Office, secured the area, and The Shasta County Interagency Bomb Team was requested.

It was later determined the device was previously located in the Burney Area and unknowingly transported by the citizen to the Montgomery Creek area. After discovering the device, the citizen immediately placed the device and additional contents in an empty parking lot adjacent to the Montgomery Creek Post Office and waited for law enforcement to arrive. Deputies also confirmed there was no intentional or direct threat to the Post Office based on where the device was originally discovered.

Nearby residents and Montgomery Creek Elementary School were contacted and advised to shelter in place. Members of the Interagency Bomb Team arrived at the location and rendered the device safe at approximately 12:01 PM.

This incident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office at 530-245-6540.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the California Highway Patrol and Redding Police Department for their assistance in this investigation.”
