On Oct. 2, law enforcement personnel were dispatched following reports of a man armed with a handgun. Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers identified that the individual was facing a mental health crisis and expressing intentions of self-harm.

Utilizing crisis negotiation methods and de-escalation tactics, officers maintained communication with the subject over an extended period. With operational support provided by neighboring law enforcement agencies, responders convinced the individual to surrender peacefully, preventing any injuries or loss of life.

Department officials highlighted the outcome as a demonstration of the effectiveness of specialized crisis intervention training for front-line personnel responding to behavioral health emergencies.

Individuals facing a mental health crisis, or those seeking support for others, can connect with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. The service operates free of charge, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
