Vehicle Theft Suspect Arrested in Healdsburg After Approaching Officer to Ask the Time

HEALDSBURG, CA — “On October 7, 2026, at approximately 8:22 AM, the Healdsburg Police Department was alerted by the Flock Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) system that a stolen vehicle had entered city limits.

Officers immediately flooded the area to locate the vehicle. A responding officer spotted the vehicle crossing Memorial Bridge; however, the driver managed to evade contact before the officer could turn around.

A short time later, officers located the stolen vehicle parked and unoccupied near the Safeway Shopping Center. Officers maintained surveillance on the vehicle from a distance, monitoring it to see if the driver would return.

While officers were watching the vehicle, a male subject matching the physical description of the driver approached an officer on foot and asked for the current time. Recognizing the unusual nature of the interaction under the circumstances, the officer engaged the individual in conversation. The individual then asked the officer if he was looking for somebody.

The subject reported that he was from Santa Rosa and had parked his vehicle down the street, in direct proximity to the stolen car. After some more conversation, the officer asked what type of vehicle the subject drove. Following a brief hesitation, he stated that he drove a Mini Cooper, the same type as the stolen vehicle.

The individual was immediately detained. Following further investigation, the subject confessed to stealing the vehicle out of Santa Rosa. Multiple pieces of evidence linking the subject to the vehicle were found inside of it. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility on motor vehicle theft charges. The vehicle was returned to its rightful owner.”
