Oakland Man Faces Charges for Assault and Robbery of a 77-Year-old Woman

OAKLAND — Derrick J. Walker, 28, of Oakland, allegedly assaulted and robbed a 77-year-old
woman, and attempted a separate armed robbery. Oakland officers arrested Walker on
September 10, and he was booked into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.
The elderly woman was robbed of her shoulder bag and its contents. This robbery happened
on August 27 on 8th Avenue, near Lake Merritt. “She was assaulted and knocked to ground,
resulting in injuries,” according to a prepared statement from the Alameda County District
Attorney’s Office.
The earlier attempted robbery occurred on August 19 inside a convenience store. “Walker
entered Sky Market at 2645 14th Avenue, armed with an assault rifle. Walker demanded
money and fired several rounds. Fortunately, no one was injured.”
Walker reportedly fled empty-handed from the botched attempted robbery. No cash nor other
property were stolen during the incident at Sky Market.
Multiple charges have been filed against Walker. His charges include second-degree robbery,
assault with a firearm, and use and discharge of a firearm. In addition, related enhancements
were added to his charges.
Walker remains in custody ineligible for release on bond in connection with both crimes,
pending a parole revocation hearing on October 1. Walker has three prior felony robbery
convictions on his record, according the statement from the Alameda County DA’s office.
