Brian Russell Stange Convicted of First-Degree Murder and Stalking in Bishop Shooting Death
BISHOP, CA – Inyo County District Attorney Dana Crom announced today that a jury has convicted Brian Russell Stange of first-degree murder and stalking in connection with the fatal shooting of David Miller in 2024.
The jury also found true special allegations that Stange committed the murder while lying in wait and through the personal use of a firearm.
On February 12, 2024, Miller was walking toward his residence in Bishop when an assailant shot him in the back. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Department initiated a joint homicide investigation alongside the Bishop Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and regional law enforcement partners, ultimately identifying and arresting Stange as the suspect.
Subsequent investigation and trial evidence revealed that Stange had stalked Miller in the weeks leading up to the killing. Prosecutors established that Stange’s actions were driven by a desire to eliminate Miller, who was involved in a romantic relationship with an individual Stange sought to date.
During the trial, prosecutors led by Assistant District Attorney David Christensen presented testimony from 32 witnesses alongside physical evidence, including the firearm utilized in the murder. Following five days of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts.
Stange is scheduled to be sentenced in Inyo County Superior Court on November 13, 2026.
