Authorities Identify Deceased Nevada City Man, Preliminary Findings Rule Out Foul Play
NEVADA, CA – The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office has identified a man found deceased last week along Highway 49 as 55-year-old Thomas Joseph Leal Sr. of Nevada City.
Sheriff’s deputies initially responded to a report of a death in the 22000 block of Highway 49 shortly after 12:00 p.m. on August 28, 2026. Due to details provided to detectives alongside Leal’s personal history, major crimes investigators opened a suspicious death investigation.
Following a multi-day inquiry, law enforcement officials released an update on September 2, 2026, indicating that preliminary autopsy results suggest no foul play was involved and that the death appears to have been accidental.
