Man with Prior Convictions for Stabbings Allegedly Stabs 5 More Victims

OAKLAND, CA — A homeless man previously convicted for random stabbings in 2013 allegedly
stabbed five more victims, including one victim who died. Jose Jesus Rodriguez, 34, was
arrested on August 24, shortly after the latest random stabbing attacks.

The victim who died, 58-year-old Gonsalo Lopez, was stabbed on 38th Avenue near Cesar
Chavez Park. Four other victims survived stabbing attacks, which all occurred in Oakland’s
Fruitvale district on August 24.

One of the other victims who was stabbed is a homeless man. A man riding on the back of a
scooter and woman nearby were stabbed, and a passenger was stabbed at Fruitvale BART
Station.

“Officers took Rodriguez into custody the same day,” Oakland police said in a prepared
statement. Rodriguez was transported from Oakland and booked into Alameda County Santa
Rita Jail on August 25 at 8:08 a.m.

Multiple charges filed on August 27 against Rodriguez include murder, attempted murder, and
special allegations for causing great bodily injury.

Rodriguez has prior convictions for attempted murders in November 2013, when four victims
were stabbed near Fruitvale BART Station. He also has prior convictions for attacking a
rideshare driver and a sanitation worker in 2019.

In addition, Rodriguez has prior arrests on his record for assaults, battery, and multiple parole
violations. Plus, he has previous arrests for exhibiting a weapon/not a firearm, and being
under the influence of a controlled substance.
