Man Faces Multiple Charges for Death of a Golf Course Groundskeeper

SAN LEANDRO —Jason R. McDermott faces multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter for a hit-and-run crash at a golf course. McDermott, 43, a construction worker from Oakland, is believed responsible for the death of a groundskeeper.

On April 18, an employee was found lying unconscious at Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro. The victim died from his severe injuries two days later at a hospital.

McDermott was allegedly the driver of a pickup truck, which crashed into the victim who was riding a lawn mower. It turns out the truck was stolen.

Multiple witnesses reported seeing the truck being driven recklessly near the crash scene. Witnesses also reported seeing the suspect fleeing from the area.

McDermott was arrested April 21 and booked at Santa Rita Jail. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of suspected controlled substances for sale. He was also booked for burglary, vehicle theft and other suspected crimes.

On April 21, McDermott was charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. Additional charges filed against him include receiving a stolen motor vehicle, and hit-and-run driving. He is scheduled to appear in court to answer charges on May 10.

McDermott has 20 previous arrests on his record, including several for burglary, thefts, and possession of controlled substances. He has prior convictions for vehicle theft, possession of controlled substances and identity theft. In addition, he has prior convictions for vehicle
burglary and DUI arrests.
