SAN LEANDRO — Police seeking a burglary suspect encountered an armed driver speeding through a residential area crashing into vehicles. The man was arrested after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during his third collision.

The burglary was reported on February 2 at 6:40 p.m. The caller said the burglar fled from the 500 block of Callan Avenue in a brown SUV.

Responding officers located an SUV, matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle. It was traveling at a high rate of speed through a residential neighborhood.

Officers briefly lost sight of the SUV, before it crashed into two parked vehicles and collided with another occupied vehicle. The SUV flipped over several times before coming to a stop on the 600 block of Oakes Boulevard.

The occupants of the third vehicle hit by the SUV were uninjured. The SUV driver, 23-year-old Bryant Abernathy most recently from Antioch, required treatment at a hospital trauma center.

The smash-ups resulted in an electric power outage in the area. Nevertheless, officers who investigated found a handgun, outside on the ground near the crashed SUV.

San Leandro Police said in a prepared statement. “It was later determined that the brown SUV was not related to the initial burglary investigation.

Abernathy was arrested on firearms-related charges and vehicle code offenses for his actions. However, he does have prior arrests and convictions for burglaries in 2019 and 2017, which resulted in jail time and probation.
