Armed Standoff on Rodriguez Street Ends in Arrest of 23-Year-Old Man

WATSONVILLE, CA — A 23-year-old man was taken into custody the morning of August 21st, following an armed standoff with law enforcement officers on the 100 block of Rodriguez Street.

Officers responded to reports at approximately 7:30 a.m. regarding an individual threatening individuals with a knife. Upon arrival, personnel located Juan Carlos Aparicio, 23, sitting inside a small children’s pool.

When Aparicio refused initial requests to exit the pool, officers deployed a crisis negotiator to communicate with him, alongside a drone pilot to monitor the scene from the air. After more than 30 minutes of negotiation, Aparicio repeatedly reached toward his pocket, ignored commands, and armed himself with a pair of scissors.

Officers deployed Pepperball rounds to gain compliance, but Aparicio continued to resist. Officers then utilized a Taser, allowing them to gain control of the suspect and take him into custody.

Aparicio was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of brandishing a weapon, trespassing, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest.
