Suspect Arrested Following Fatal Incident on Hewitt Place in Garden Grove
GARDEN GROVE, CA — On Sunday, August 9, 2026, at 11:32 p.m., Garden Grove Police Department officers responded to a call for medical aid on the 8800 block of Hewitt Place regarding an individual bleeding from the head.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers located a 17-year-old female victim, identified as Janely Gutierrez of Garden Grove, with severe head injuries. Paramedics transported Gutierrez to a nearby hospital in grave condition.
During the initial investigation, officers determined that Gutierrez and her live-in boyfriend, 18-year-old Garden Grove resident Ethan Vidal, were involved in an altercation prior to the call. Vidal spoke voluntarily with responding officers and was subsequently taken into custody on suspicion of attempted homicide.
On Monday, August 10, 2026, hospital staff pronounced Gutierrez deceased. Following her death, law enforcement confirmed Vidal as the primary suspect in the homicide investigation.
