Suspect Arrested on Homicide and Hate Crime Allegations Following Fatal Stabbing in Marysville
MARYSVILLE, CA — On August 11, 2026, at approximately 11:49 a.m., deputies with the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a stabbing near the 200 block of A Street in Marysville, at the location formerly known as the Hollywood Trailer Park. Responding personnel rendered medical aid to a 46-year-old male, identified as Akili Lewis of Marysville, who was subsequently transported to Adventist Health where he died from his injuries.
Sheriff’s detectives conducted an investigation and determined that the physical assault occurred in a river-bottom area near a transient encampment. According to witnesses, the suspect yelled racial slurs directed at the victim during the altercation.
Following the investigation, detectives and members of the Sheriff’s Office Problem Oriented Policing (POP) Team arrested 48-year-old Jesse Stewart of Marysville. Stewart was booked on suspicion of homicide under California Penal Code section 187, along with an alleged hate-crime allegation under California Penal Code section 422.55.
Using Unmanned Aircraft Systems and members of the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, investigators recovered a knife from the Yuba River that is suspected of being used in the assault. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
