In-Custody Death at Mono County Jail

BRIDGEPORT, CA  — “On Friday, July 10, 2026, at 3:10 am, Correctional Deputies found a male incarcerated person, John DeMotto, age 49, unresponsive alone in his assigned cell. They immediately requested medical assistance and began life-saving measures. Mono County Emergency Medical Services and Bridgeport Fire personnel responded and continued resuscitation efforts. Despite these efforts, Mr. DeMotto was pronounced deceased at 3:52 am.

Investigators from the Mono County District Attorney and Mono County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and are conducting the In-Custody Death investigation. The autopsy will be conducted by Washoe County, which has been contracted by the Mono County Sheriff’s Office for pathology services.

Mr. DeMotto had been in custody since June 9, 2026, on charges of driving under the influence of narcotics and possession of narcotics.
