OAKLAND, CA — A Stockton man arrested on July 1 has been charged with the murder of a rideshare driver in East Oakland last month. Leonard D. Evans, 43, remains in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail ineligible for release on bond.
The victim a 41-year-old Williams I. Parra-Carbajal was fatally shot on June 14, near the intersection of Seminary Avenue and International Boulevard. He was sitting inside his parked car when a gunman approached him, and opened fire at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Oakland police responded to reports of the gunfire and found the off-duty rideshare driver suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. The victim was the father of four children.
A prepared statement from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said. “The victim was struck multiple times by gunfire, and pronounced deceased by emergency medical personnel at the scene.”
The fatal shooting happened in front of eyewitnesses who provided statements to the Oakland police. Homicide investigators also reviewed surveillance camera video other “electronic evidence” leading to Evans being identified as the suspect.
Evans was tracked to Stockton, where he was apprehended without further incident. Charges were filed against Evans on July 6. His charges include murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and intentional discharge of firearm to cause great bodily injury. Evan’s pretrial hearing, under docket number 26-CR-008396, is currently scheduled for Friday July 10th at 9am in Department 11 of the Rene C Davidson Alameda County Courthouse.
Public records show that Evans previously lived in Oakland and has a prior criminal history spanning multiple jurisdictions, with past arrests in San Joaquin and Alameda counties for offenses including domestic battery, evasion, and petty theft.
