Foot Pursuit Following Main Street Shoplifting Incident Leads to Arrest and Officer Injury

WATSONVILLE, CA — On June 22nd 2026, just after 10:00 a.m., police officers responded to a report of a shoplifting incident at a commercial establishment located within the 1000 block of Main Street. Prior to the arrival of law enforcement personnel, the suspect departed from the retail store while in possession of the stolen merchandise. Store personnel provided the responding officers with a physical description of the suspect, identified as a 34-year-old female.

Shortly thereafter, an officer located a individual matching the description, identified as Erica Ayala Zamora, and attempted to initiate contact. Zamora fled from the scene on foot, resulting in a foot pursuit by responding officers. The pursuit concluded when officers took Zamora into custody.

During the apprehension and arrest process, one police officer sustained a serious leg injury. The injured officer was subsequently transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment, and the injury is reported to be non-life-threatening. Due to the incident and the subsequent response by emergency personnel, the intersection of Main Street and Freedom Boulevard was temporarily closed to traffic before being reopened.

Following her apprehension, Zamora was transported to the Santa Cruz County Jail and booked into the facility. She faces multiple charges, including shoplifting, felony resisting arrest, and causing a serious injury to a peace officer.
