The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on suspicion of shooting at passing cars earlier this week.

Deputies responded to the area of Winkle Avenue and Soquel Drive and learned that the suspect had last been seen running into the Emerald Bay Apartments. A spent 9mm shell casing was also found near the intersection.

Soon after establishing a perimeter, deputies intercepted a man matching callers’ descriptions as he walked through the apartment complex, identifying him as 18-year-old Anthony Martinez-Franco.

When they searched his backpack, deputies found a loaded handgun that matched the caliber of the casing found earlier.

Martinez-Franco was arrested and booked on several charges, including willful discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm with an altered identification, and carrying a loaded firearm in a public space.
