CHP Officers Arrest Driver Found Asleep in Center Lane of Interstate 5
ENCINITAS, CA — During a routine patrol in Encinitas, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers from the Oceanside Area located a vehicle stopped within a active lane of traffic on Interstate 5. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers found the driver asleep behind the steering wheel. Law enforcement personnel secured the scene and initiated contact with the operator. The subsequent roadside investigation resulted in the arrest of the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).
Following this incident, the CHP announced a statewide DUI Maximum Enforcement Period scheduled to run from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, through 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 21. During this timeframe, CHP officers across the state are directed to deploy in higher concentrations to detect impaired drivers and enforce regulations against other hazardous traffic violations.
Statistical data provided by the agency indicates that between the years 2023 and 2025, collisions involving impaired drivers within the state of California resulted in an annual average of more than 800 fatalities and approximately 20,000 injuries. To mitigate these figures, traffic safety officials recommend that individuals establish transportation plans prior to consuming alcohol or impairing substances, which includes utilizing rideshare services, designating sober drivers, or remaining at their current location.
