HUNGINGTON BEACH, CA — Officers with the Huntington Beach Police Department recently arrested a woman after responding to a report of a child locked inside a vehicle. Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers located an unattended infant inside a car that had its windows only slightly open.
According to police reports, officers located the child’s mother inside a nearby business shortly after arriving. The infant, who was observed to be hot and perspiring, was removed from the vehicle. The mother stated to officers that she had left the child unattended for several minutes. She was subsequently taken into custody on charges of child endangerment, and the infant was later released into the custody of the father.
Law enforcement authorities noted that internal temperatures within a parked vehicle can increase rapidly even when the windows are cracked open, posing risks of injury or death. In response to the incident, the department issued a public safety advisory noting an statistical increase in vehicle-related heat fatalities during the summer months. The department recommended several preventative measures for caregivers, including placing a visual reminder in the front seat, storing personal items like phones or wallets in the back seat to ensure a secondary check, and keeping unoccupied vehicles locked at home to prevent children from entering them.
