Surveillance Camera Alert Leads Arrests for Jacket Thefts, Drugs and Outstanding Warrants
– by Jim Emerson
BERKELEY, CA — An alert from a surveillance camera on May 25 spurred arrests of Anthony W. Kerman, 37, of Berkeley, and 41-year-old Dezary M. Jones, residency unknown. Kerman was driving a car with license plates matching the getaway car used to flee from a theft at a sporting goods store.
North Face Berkeley Outlet on Fifth Street reported theft of jackets on May 24 with a $2,400
retail value. A store employee told responding officers that the suspect fled driving a Toyota
Corolla.
Berkeley patrol officers converged the next day when a camera detected the same car near
the intersection of Ninth and Gilman streets. Police stopped the car shortly after 1 p.m., on
San Pablo Avenue, near Gilman Street.
An officer observed Kerman in the driver’s seat wearing a jacket from the North Face, with
price and security tags still attached. More stolen jackets were found when the car was
searched. Police also recovered methamphetamine, along with evidently stolen checks and
credit cards.
Kerman was identified as the alleged North Face thief. He was booked on suspicion of
commercial burglary, grand theft, possession of stolen property, identity theft, and possession
of methamphetamine.
Kerman remains in custody at Berkeley City Jail in lieu of $110,000 bond, pending
arraignment and transfer to Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.
Jones was booked for outstanding warrants from other jurisdictions, identity theft, and drug-
related charges. She remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $107,500 bond.
