Freeway Shooting Suspect Arrested after Crashing into 2 Vehicles

 

FREMONT — A freeway shooting suspect was arrested after he exitedfrom the freeway and crashed into two vehicles. The shooting andsubsequent police chase occurred during rush hour.

California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched June 23 at 4:35 p.m., following a report of a shooting. It happened in the southbound lanes ofInterstate 880 in Hayward, north of Industrial Parkway.

Approximately four minutes later, CHP officers located the shootingsuspect. At this point, he was still traveling southbound and approachingDecoto Road, and driving recklessly.

Officers pursued the suspect who exited from the freeway onto Fremontcity streets. They continued following the suspect until he crashed into twovehicles.

Kevin Sanders, a 28-year-old resident of Berkeley, was taken into custodyon Grimmer Boulevard, near Auto Mall Parkway. Sanders was booked atcounty jail.

Sanders and the occupants of the two other vehicles sustained minorinjuries, and they received medical treatment. The initial shooting victimwas not injured when a bullet entered the victim’s truck.

The shooting victim phoned 911 and followed the shooter until CHP officersarrived and began chasing the suspect. Meanwhile, Interstate 880 wasclosed in the vicinity and traffic was detoured for three hours.

Sanders faces multiple charges for –

 Attempted murder
 Shooting at an occupied vehicle
 Assault with a firearm
 Possession of a controlled substance
 Felony hit and run
 Evading an officer with disregard for public safety
