Three Suspects Arrested in Organized Retail Theft Case Following Drone-Assisted Foot Pursuit
CARLSBAD, CA – Police officers arrested three suspected members of an organized retail theft group following a shoplifting incident at a Sephora retail store that led to a foot pursuit and the deployment of an unmanned aerial drone.
The incident began when patrol officers responded to a report of a shoplifting in progress at the cosmetics retailer. Store loss prevention personnel reported that a male suspect was actively concealing merchandise inside the business before exiting the establishment without rendering payment.
Responding officers located the primary suspect in the adjacent parking lot, where he was meeting two other individuals at a nearby vehicle. As officers moved in to detain the group, two of the individuals were taken into custody without incident. The third suspect fled the scene on foot, prompting a foot pursuit through the commercial area.
To assist ground units, officers deployed a department drone to provide real-time aerial tracking of the fleeing suspect as he navigated through the shopping center and the surrounding properties. The aerial support allowed ground officers to coordinate their movements and safely take the individual into custody.
A subsequent search and investigation resulted in the recovery of the stolen merchandise from Sephora, alongside additional stolen goods linked to multiple retail locations, and an unspecified quantity of narcotics. Investigators determined that the three individuals are part of an organized retail theft ring connected to a series of thefts across California involving thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.
Two adult suspects were transported and booked into the county jail, while a juvenile suspect was transported to a local juvenile holding facility. The investigation into the theft ring remains active.
