Palm Springs Traffic Stop Results in Seizure of Improvised Firearm and Methamphetamine

PALM SPRINGS, CA – A proactive traffic stop conducted by a Palm Springs Police officer on Monday, May 11, 2026, resulted in the recovery of an improvised firearm and suspected narcotics, leading to the arrest of a Desert Hot Springs resident.

The enforcement contact occurred at approximately 11:18 a.m. near the intersection of North Indian Canyon Drive and Vista Chino. The responding officer initiated the stop and identified the driver as Michael Murphy.

Because Murphy was subject to probation terms, officers conducted a compliance search of the vehicle. The search yielded approximately 17.75 grams of a substance believed to be methamphetamine, along with assorted drug paraphernalia. Additionally, officers discovered an improvised 12-gauge firearm, a type of manufactured weapon frequently classified as a zip gun.

Murphy was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. He was transported and booked into the Indio Jail on multiple criminal charges, including possession of a zip gun, possession of suspected narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Department officials noted that the officer-initiated enforcement action is part of ongoing efforts to intercept illegal weapons and controlled substances within the municipality.
