Student Arrested at Freedom High School in Oakley for Carrying a Loaded Handgun
– By Jim Emerson
OAKLEY, CA — A 17-year-old student at Freedom High School was arrested on May 13 after a
teacher discovered he was carrying a loaded handgun. The teacher was able to secure the firearm
away from the juvenile before Oakley police were notified.
This incident happened inside a classroom while school was in session. The teacher intervened
immediately after observing the student in possession of the gun. The teacher physically secured the
firearm and separated it from the student.
Police were dispatched to the school at 3:16 p.m., when a school administrator reported a student was
in possession of a firearm. No school lockdown was initiated due to the rapid containment of the
perceived threat. School administrators detained the student until police arrived, without further
incident.
“Our police officers worked with the school staff and took the student into custody,” Oakley police said
in a prepared statement. “We booked the student into Juvenile Hall for charges related to possession
of a loaded firearm in a school zone.”
Details concerning the student’s background are protected under juvenile privacy laws. However, the
decision to hold him at Juvenile Hall underscores the severity of the incident involving a loaded
weapon on campus.
The handgun was kept in a secure location until Oakley police recovered it as evidence. An
investigation of this incident remains ongoing. Oakley police are investigating the origin of the firearm,
and whether other individuals were involved in bringing it to the school.
Freedom High School has 2,453 enrolled students. No details regarding the suspect’s academic
standing or prior disciplinary history have been released.
