POP Team Investigation Leads to Felony Arrests After Gunshots Incident in South Sacramento

SOUTH SACRAMENTO, CA  –– “On March 24, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies responded to a report of a negligent discharge on Bowling Drive in South Sacramento after a witness observed two suspects firing guns from a vehicle. Deputies located spent shell casings at the scene but were unable to locate the suspects at that time.

Central POP Deputies followed up on the investigation and located CCTV footage of the suspects and their vehicle. Through investigative work, Deputies were able to identify one of the individuals involved, as 35-year-old Evan Pimental.

As POP Deputies and SED (SWAT) prepared to serve a search warrant at Pimental’s residence  he rode away on his scooter. Deputies stopped Pimental and detained him without incident. POP Deputies went on to search his residence, where they discovered 27-year-old Dustin Hegseth, who was also detained without incident.

During the search, deputies located narcotics, packaging materials, scales, an unregistered handgun, spent shell casings, a large quantity of live ammunition, high-capacity magazines, a significant amount of cash, and automatic firearm parts.

Pimental, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms, was taken into custody and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple felony charges, including felon in possession of a firearm, possession of narcotics for sale, possession of narcotics while armed, felon in possession of ammunition, and possession of an extended magazine.

Hegseth was also arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, and violation of probation.

This is the type of follow-up work that our POP Teams do day-in and day-out but are subject to being cut under the county’s proposed budget cuts. Public safety should not take a back seat in the county budget.”
