Fatal Shooting on Howe Avenue in North Sacramento: Investigation Underway Following Freeway Closure
NORTH SACRAMENTO, CA — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Tuesday afternoon, September 8, 2026, outside a Howe Avenue commercial center.
Sheriff’s North Patrol personnel responded to the scene just prior to 3 p.m. following emergency calls regarding gunfire. Responders located a 38-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds; she died at the location.
Witness descriptions allowed officers to input the fleeing vehicle’s information into the FLOCK reader database. The automated network quickly tracked the car toward the intersection of Highway 50 and Howe Avenue. Regional Transit officers attempted a traffic stop, causing the driver to halt abruptly. Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers found the driver, identified as 22-year-old Rohit Rohit, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Detectives report that Rohit had target-followed and harassed the woman over the preceding eight months. The pattern began in January when the victim discovered an electronic tracker attached to her automobile. Investigators documented further incidents, including Rohit letting the air out of her tires to stage an encounter and using a duplicated key to enter her home without permission while she slept.
Although the victim initially resisted legal action, law enforcement officers kept touch with her regarding safety precautions and urged her to seek a court protection order in May. She secured the order, and deputies logged a violation on July 29 after Rohit left unwanted items at her doorstep.
On the day of the incident, Rohit arrived at the shopping plaza ahead of the victim. When she approached her parked vehicle, Rohit confronted her. As she tried to escape, he pursued her and fired multiple shots, resulting in her death.
