MONTEREY, CA – Monterey Police officers arrested a 22-year-old Royal Oaks resident on March 14, 2026, following a series of events at the Portola Hotel. At approximately 10:52 p.m., authorities received reports that a male suspect had activated a fire alarm in the hotel lobby and was armed with a knife. According to department records, the individual allegedly used the weapon to lunge at hotel employees. No injuries to hotel staff or guests were reported during the initial encounter.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers identified the suspect as Bryan Milanes. Milanes reportedly fled on foot as the first officer exited a patrol vehicle. A pursuit followed into the 300 block of Alvarado Street, where Milanes attempted to conceal himself behind a business and beneath a stairwell. Because the location was a dead end, officers were able to corner the suspect. After being ordered to drop his weapon, Milanes complied and was taken into custody without further incident.
During the foot pursuit, one Monterey Police officer sustained injuries after falling on a metal grate. the officer was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Milanes was also transported to a hospital for medical clearance before being booked into the Monterey County Jail. The total process for transport, clearance, and booking lasted approximately eight hours.
Milanes faces multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon (245(a)(1) PC), burglary (459 PC), filing a false fire alarm (148.4(a)(2) PC), and resisting a peace officer (148(a)(1) PC).
