Stolen Vehicle Suspect Arrested Following Police Chase along Interstate 580 in Oakland
– By Jim Emerson
OAKLAND, CA — Tevaris Sweat, 30 of Oakland, was arrested on March 2, following a high-speed
pursuit of a stolen vehicle.
The 2022 Kia Forte with a damaged ‘punched’ ignition was recovered and returned to its owner.
Oakland officers began pursuing the vehicle at approximately10:15 p.m., near International
Boulevard and 98th Avenue. The pursuit shifted from city streets to the freeway, and ended
when the suspect abandoned the vehicle.
An Oakland PD helicopter monitored the pursuit along Interstate 580, and California Highway
Patrol units were positioned near freeway ramps. At one point, Sweat allegedly drove against
traffic, while evading pursuing police.
The stolen vehicle was reportedly abandoned in a residential neighborhood near I-580, where
Sweat allegedly fled on foot. About 15 minutes later he was placed under arrest by Oakland
officers, directed to him by the helicopter overhead.
Sweat presently remains in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail on a no-bond hold,
because he was on probation. The following charges were filed against Sweat –
· Vehicle theft/unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle
· Evading an officer by driving against traffic
· Driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph
· Probation Violation
Multiple special enhancements were filed against Sweat stemming from a prior vehicle theft
conviction. Sweet is a repeat offender with convictions in 2025 and 2021.
In November 2018, BART police arrested Sweat, who allegedly ran onto train tracks, following
a battery incident investigation.
