OAKLEY — A man accused of attempting to kill a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputy was
transferred from a hospital to jail on February 18.
Raymond E. Smith 54, of Oakley, is being housed at the West County Detention Facility in lieu of $1.3 million bond.
Smith was hospitalized for a month for treatment of a “self-inflicted” gunshot wound, while he was
barricaded inside his residence on January 12. A SWAT team assembled outside reportedly heard one
gunshot, before finding Smith wounded inside his residence.
Earlier the same day, Smith allegedly shot at a deputy dispatched to a call regarding violation of a
restraining order. The deputy attempted a traffic stop near Gold Run Drive in Oakley. The deputy was
not struck when an exchange of gunshots were fired. Smith next fled from the scene to his home on
Placer Drive.
Multiple charges were filed against Smith involving attempted murder of a peace officer. Additional
charges include assault with a firearm on an officer, intentional discharge of a firearm, disobeying a
court order, and probation violation.
Smith’s bond amount is a cumulative total, which reflects not only the gravity of charges for attempted
murder of an officer. It also involves three other cases filed against Smith for prior unrelated offenses.
· $1.25 million for attempted murder of peace officer, and assault with a firearm
· $100,000 for violation of a domestic violence restraining order
· $25,000 for an outstanding warranted related to package thefts
· $10,000 for additional misdemeanor warrants
One of Smith’s other pending cases involves second-degree burglary in Discovery Bay. Smith is
accused of stealing packages from porches last year in December.
