Investigation Links Found Firearm to December Campus Assault
SANTA CRUZ, CA – JANUARY 28TH 2026
“Update: Aptos High School Campus Incident
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office is providing the following update regarding the ongoing investigation
involving Aptos High School.
On Sunday, December 28, 2025, during winter break, a group of juveniles assaulted another juvenile on the
Aptos High School campus. Firearms were present during the incident; however, not discharged. Shortly after
the incident, one juvenile was arrested in connection with the assault.
On Sunday, January 18, 2026, a bag containing a firearm and ammunition was discovered on the Aptos High
School campus. A mask was also located nearby. The items were immediately reported, and Sheriff’s
deputies responded without delay.
Over the course of our investigation, Sheriff’s detectives have determined that the firearm, ammunition and
mask are connected to the December 28, 2025 incident.
Based on the information gathered, the Sheriff’s Office has determined there is no ongoing threat to the
community or school. The firearm, ammunition, and mask were not placed on campus as part of any pre-
planned event targeting the school; rather, they were evidence discarded following the assault that occurred
during winter break.
Due to the incident involving multiple juveniles that resulted in an arrest, and the subsequent court
proceedings, no additional details can be released at this time.
