SAN RAFAEL — A man menaced customers with a box cutter on a Sunday morning, outside
the Home Depot store on Shoreline Parkway.
The suspect allegedly responsible, Eduardo Garcia-Hernandez, 20, of San Rafael, was arrested on December 14.
Garcia-Hernandez was apprehended at 10:54 a.m. He was booked and remains in custody at
Marin County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
The suspect is a homeless person who roams San Rafael, and reportedly has worked in retail sales.
“He threatened to stab at least four victims, and vandalized a vehicle while in the Home Depot
parking lot. Fortunately, none of the victims were stabbed or injured,” San Rafael police said
in a prepared statement.
Officers responded to several 911 calls that morning reporting a man chasing people with a
box cutter. When two of the victims got into a car seeking safety, Garcia-Hernandez allegedly
used the box cutter to vandalize the car’s hood.
Police found Garcia-Hernandez near the store entrance. A Home Depot employee prevented
Garcia-Hernandez from entering the store, until responding officers arrived at the scene.
Garcia-Hernandez allegedly spat on officers, who deescalated the situation, before taking him
into custody. They found a box cutter in his possession.
He was booked on open charges for assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, public
intoxication, and assault against an officer.
