Violent Suspect Arrested Twice – Stabbing a Student and Battery on BART

BERKELEY— A transient man faces multiple charges for allegedly stabbing a Berkeley High
School student in the nose with a pen.

Denarian A. Shipp, 32, was recently arrested twice.

Shipp was arrested for the student assault, and for another unrelated attack, which both
occurred on December 3.

Berkeley police spoke with witnesses and identified Shipp as the suspect in the student
assault. They found Shipp downtown, near Shattuck Avenue and Kitteridge Street, where he
was arrested on December 4 at 1:40 p.m.

Formerly from Los Angeles, Shipp remains in custody at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail
ineligible for release on bond. Charges filed against Shipp include assault with a deadly
weapon, causing corporal and great bodily injury, and child abuse.

The stabbing that Shipp allegedly committed happened December 3 shortly after 3:30 p.m. A
14-year-old boy was accosted while waiting to cross at the intersection of University Avenue
and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Reportedly, Shipp first approached and asked the boy for a phone charger. Then almost
immediately, Shipp allegedly grabbed onto the boy, and shoved a pen downward into the
boy’s nose. The victim suffered what are described as “great bodily injuries.”

Following the altercation, the suspect and victim each fled in opposite directions. The boy ran
directly to the nearby Berkeley Police Station for help. Now the suspect was in trouble with
the law for two attacks on the same day.

Before the student stabbing happened, Shipp was released from custody after being arrested
for another unrelated violent incident. BART police arrested Shipp on December 3 on
suspicion of battery while on public transportation property. Not long after Shipp was released
from custody for the first incident the stabbing happened.
