Lake County Authorities Investigate In-Custody Death of 50-Year-Old Colorado Man at Kelseyville Park
KELSEYVILLE, CA — An individual detained by deputies at Kelseyville Community Park on September 9, 2025, was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. The individual has been identified as Ryan Vandever, 50, of Colorado, following the completion of next of kin notification.
The incident began when deputies responded to the park for reports of an individual exhibiting erratic behavior and harassing people. Upon contact, deputies observed the man to be lethargic and having difficulty responding to questions, leading them to determine he required medical aid. Medics were requested and responded to the scene.
According to a release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the individual’s behavior escalated when medics attempted to provide treatment, and he became combative. To ensure the safety of the individual, medics, and deputies, he was placed in handcuffs and detained.
The individual reportedly continued to resist medical personnel, preventing them from administering care. During attempts to assess his condition, he became unresponsive. Medics initiated CPR immediately and transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is treating this as an in-custody death because the individual was detained prior to his passing. The Sheriff’s Office has activated the critical incident protocol, and the Lake County District Attorney’s Office is the lead investigating agency. The cause and manner of death remain under investigation at this time.
