NOVATO, CA — David R. Slattery, a 33-year-old Novato resident, was placed under arrest
following an assault at the Islamic Center of North Marin. Slattery remains in custody at Marin
County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

His troubles with law started when a disturbance was reported at the mosque, 7078 Redwood
Boulevard, Novato. Officers responded to the mosque on September 5 at approximately 11:30
a.m.

“A patrol officer was speaking to a witness when he heard what sounded like a vehicle
collision,” Novato police said in a prepared statement. “The officer ran to investigate and saw
a man getting out of the driver’s seat of a vehicle.”

Slattery who works as an Uber driver allegedly hit an outbuilding on the property with his
vehicle.

Then he allegedly forcefully opened a door to the building, and started making
incoherent comments.

Next, he allegedly began physically attacking a mosque member.

“The officer intervened, stopped the attack, and detained the suspect,” according to Novato
PD. Slattery was arrested at 11:34 a.m.

He was booked on open charges on suspicion of burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon/not a firearm. Slattery was also booked for felony
vandalism.

The male victim of the attack suffered minor injuries, and he was transported to a hospital for
medical treatment.

“Officers were unable to establish that this incident was hate-motivated or a hate crime,”
Novato police said. “Enabling our officer to be in the right place at the right time to intervene
prevented further harm.”
