CHP Investigating After Hit-and-Run Death of Pedestrian on State Route 99
WINTON, CA — “On August 30, 2025, at approximately 12:25 a.m., the Merced Communications Center (MCC) received a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic crash in the area of northbound State Route 99, south of Westside Boulevard. Callers reported that the involved vehicle had fled the scene northbound on State Route 99 after hitting the pedestrian.
CHP officers responded to the crash scene and upon arrival immediately proceeded to administer CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) on the adult male pedestrian who was located lying in the #2 lane of northbound State Route 99, south of Westside Boulevard. Medical personnel arrived shortly after and took over medical aid. Unfortunately, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary investigation determined that for unknown reasons a 34-year-old male from Atwater, CA was walking in the #2 lane of northbound State Route 99, south of Westside Boulevard. An unknown vehicle was traveling in the #2 lane of State Route 99, south of Westside Boulevard, at an unknown rate of speed. The vehicle struck the pedestrian and continued to travel in a northerly direction on northbound State Route 99. The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs are a factor in this crash. This crash remains under investigation.
