Vandalism Suspect Arrested After Standoff in North Highlands
NORTH HIGHLANDS, CA — “Last night at approximately 8 PM, Sheriff’s North Patrol Deputies responded to the 3800 block of Lankershim Way in North Highlands to the report of a disturbance. Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Jeremiah Rhey, vandalized a family member’s vehicle and ripped off a wiper blade and fled the scene. Family members told Deputies that Rhey wanted Deputies to shoot him. At approximately 11:30 PM, Rhey returned to the residence, spray painted the car he had vandalized earlier, and threatened to burn the family member’s house down. Deputies arrived less than 5 minutes after the call, but Rhey had already fled in a vehicle.
Later in the night, at approximately 4 AM, Deputies located the vehicle driving near Watt Avenue and A Street in North Highlands and attempted to conduct a vehicle stop to arrest Rhey. Rhey pulled into a gas station near Elkhorn Boulevard and Walerga Road, then refused to exit the vehicle. Due to Rhey’s statements, the Sheriff’s Critical Incident Negotiations Team and Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) responded to the scene as a precaution. Deputies attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender for over two hours, to avail.
Just after 6:30 AM, Rhey exited the vehicle, surrendered, and was subsequently taken into custody. He was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail and booked for several felonies. He is being held on $5000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on August 13.
