HAYWARD, CA — Police recently arrested a freeway shooting suspect found hanging out at a
casino.
Rony D. Murcia-Castillo, 39, of Hayward, is suspected of committing a shooting that
happened on Interstate 880 in Hayward.
“Detectives identified Murcia-Castillo as a suspect in a shooting that occurred May 26,”
California Highway Patrol said in a prepared statement. “A driver reported being shot at while
merging onto northbound I-880 from Jackson Street.”
Fortunately, the shooting victim was not injured during the incident. “The incredible work of
our detectives is responsible for yet another freeway shooter being held to answer for their
crimes,” CHP said.
CHP special investigations unit detectives searched Murcia-Castillo’s residence on July 30.
Though he was not at home at the time.
Detectives found Murcia-Castillo about 28 miles away at the San Pablo Lytton Casino.
Officers from the San Pablo Police Department responded and placed him under arrest,
without further incident.
Murcia-Castillo was transported to Alameda County Santa Rita Jail. He was booked on
suspicion of attempted murder and multiple firearm-related charges including –
· Assault with a semiautomatic firearm
· Assault with a firearm on a person
· Shooting at an inhabited vehicle
· Carrying a loaded firearm while in vehicle/public place
· Possession of a firearm and controlled substance
· Possession of a a narcotic controlled substance
Murcia-Castillo no longer remains in custody, pending further review of the shooting incident
by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
