Carlsbad Man Arrested on Murder Charges Following Fatal Altercation Near Cole Library

CARLSBAD, CA  — ‘‘On July 26, 2025, at approximately 2:17 a.m., the Carlsbad Police Department received a report of an altercation occurring on the exterior rear side of the Cole Library, located at 1250 Carlsbad Village Drive. The caller reported that a male subject, later identified as 52-year-old Carlsbad resident Homero Duran, was physically attacking others. The caller provided Duran’s physical description and other identifying information.

Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male who was injured and unconscious. Officers, along with personnel from the Carlsbad Fire Department, attempted life-saving measures, but unfortunately, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officers immediately began an extensive search of the area to locate the suspect. At approximately 4:48 a.m., Carlsbad officers located Duran near Tyler Street and Walnut Avenue. He was detained without incident. Duran was arrested and later booked into the Vista Detention Facility on a charge of PC 187 – Murder.

Based on the initial investigation, this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. The case is being investigated as a homicide and remains active. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
