Grass Valley Man Arrested for Animal Cruelty After Welfare Check Reveals Deplorable Conditions
GRASS VALLEY, CA — ”Felix Luis Gonzalez Cruz, 48, of Grass Valley was arrested on June 23, 2025, following two separate requests for service—one for a welfare check and one for a reported dog vs dog attack.
Animal control officers as well as deputies of the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) responded on June 23 to conduct a welfare check and investigate the dog fight at a private property on the 17000 block of Greenhorn Rd. in Grass Valley, which had more than one home and inhabitants living on the property. They learned Gonzalez had eight dogs total in his care, two of which were outside upon arrival (one tied up without access to food or water and one roaming). One of the two dogs had been in a fight with another dog living on the property (the other dog required medical attention and animal control officers worked separately with that owner).
The remaining dogs were inside Gonzalez’s residence, which included a mother dog with five puppies. The residential conditions were found to be deplorable and covered in feces, urine and trash, and lacked water and food. Sadly, one of the puppies was found deceased and the composition of the puppy’s body suggested it had been deceased inside the residence for some time.
Animal control officers subsequently seized all seven of Gonzalez’s remaining dogs and arrested him for depriving animals of necessary sustenance and causing needless suffering – 597(B)PC and for resisting arrest – 148(a)(1)PC. The dogs are being cared for by Sammie’s Friends. To foster or adopt one of the rescued dogs, please call Sammie’s Friends at (530) 471-5041.
Individuals who suspect animal cruelty are urged to contact NCSO’s Animal Control Division at (530) 265-7036 or by calling non-emergency dispatch at (530) 265-7800.”
