San Mateo County Coroner Identifies Inmate Who Died in Custody

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — “The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office has determined that an incarcerated person’s death in March at a San Mateo County correctional facility was due to toxic effects of three medications.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office was recently made aware of the Coroner’s Office independent findings following the death of 25-year-old Kyle V. Harrison at the Maple Street Correctional Facility.
The Coroner’s Office is the entity responsible for determining the cause of death and the manner of death, which falls into the following categories: natural, accident, homicide, suicide and undetermined. The Coroner’s Office reported the manner of death as “accident,” and found Harrison died due to “Toxic Effects of Methadone, Amitriptyline, and Gabapentin.”
On Saturday, March 15, 2025, at approximately 4:50 p.m., Sheriff’s Office personnel assigned to the Maple Street Correctional Center were notified of an incarcerated person found unresponsive in a housing unit at the facility. Sheriff’s Office personnel immediately began administering lifesaving measures until medical staff, who are stationed inside the facility, arrived. Despite these efforts, Harrison died at the correctional facility.
Per protocol, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office and Sheriff’s Detectives were notified and responded to the correctional facility. These three agencies conduct independent investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
The Sheriff’s Office is awaiting the District Attorney’s Office findings, and in accordance with past practice, will provide an update once their independent investigation is complete.”
